Description: - Original Antique Engraving - (Taino Indians Curing The Sick With Tobacco) BY THEODORE de BRY THEODORE de BRY (Dutch, 1528-1598) "(Taino Indians curing the sick with tobacco)", 1591, 16th century line engraving. Plate #20 from Volume II of De Bry´s "Grand Voyages" DescriptionImage size: 6.2in x 8.7in. Engraved plate (#20) from Volume II of Theodor De Bry´s "Grand Voyages", depicting American Taino Indians medical treatments including curing the sick with tobacco, nursing mothers drinking blood, etc. A strong printing trimmed with margins in very good antique condition.Notes:De Bry’s copperplate engravings were among the first images that Europeans encountered about the peoples, places, and things of the Americas, even if he began making them almost a century after Columbus’s initial voyage. Volume 2, published in 1591, focused on French voyages to Florida, and was based on the accounts of the French colonist René Goulaine de Laudonnière. De Bry created engravings based on the watercolors of Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues, who was part of the French expeditions to Florida that were headed by Jean Ribault in 1562 and Laudonnière in 1564. Biography:Theodorus de Bry (also Theodor de Bry) (1528 – 27 March 1598) was an engraver, goldsmith, editor and publisher, famous for his depictions of early European expeditions to the Americas. The Spanish Inquisition forced de Bry, a Protestant, to flee his native, Spanish-controlled Southern Netherlands. He moved around Europe, starting from the city of Liège in the Prince-Bishopric of Liège (where he was born and grew up), then to Strasbourg, Antwerp, London and Frankfurt, where he settled.De Bry created a large number of engraved illustrations for his books. Most of his books were based on first-hand observations by explorers, even if De Bry himself, acting as a recorder of information, never visited the Americas. To modern eyes, many of the illustrations seem formal but detailed. .........................................................................................................................
