Description: Antique! Believed to be Sterling silver - an octagonal vinaigrette box No maker marks or hallmarks1.25" x 1.25” x .50”The back has a spot in it that looks like it’s been rubbed - where you would hold it to open it. One edge also has a very small ding in it.Lid doesn't close as well as it did originally: the hinge is a little damaged. Already discounted for the damage. This lovely sterling box is known as a "Vinaigrette", once containing cotton soaked in spirits of vinegar, smelling salts or perfume. The inner pierced cover allowed a Victorian lady or gentleman to inhale invigorating or sweet scents while walking streets filled with foul odors. This also shows older distinct British sterling hallmarks. My consignors grandmother purchased this box in either Boston or Paris. She had quite the collection of vinaigrettes and snuff boxes, some of which were used while others were displayed only. She was from the Boston area.
