Description: Another item from Country Artifacts, Great Northern Liquidation, Springfield, Vermont.This trunk is unmarked but has a latch mechanism that is identical to a very similar trunk found in my research that was made by I. Sanford Trunk Maker, Albany New York c.1822.It measures 22" long x 12" wide x 10" high overall.It is made of deal (wood planks), leather (cowhide or similar), iron bindings / reinforcements, and brass studs.On the lid are the studded initials LMB in an oval.The hinges and handles were leather, and fragments remain, but all are mostly worn away now.The hand forged latch in front is locked in place with the hinge detached as shown. We don't have the key.The interior was probably originally covered in newspaper, but that is now gone and it was painted at some point as shown.The leather on the exterior is mostly extant but is loose in a few areas as shown.
