Description: Antique Robert Pringle & Sons Set of Counter Top Gold Scales Robert Pringle (1800-1875) was apprenticed to a jeweller in Perth, Scotland, at the age of 13. He moved to London in 1820. In 1835, he established a workshop as a manufacturing jeweller at a private house in Amwell Street, Clerkenwell. In 1868, Pringle opened a shop at 21 Wilderness Row. In 1875 his son, Robert Pringle, took over the business. Robert Pringle & Co, became Robert Pringle & Son in 1882 and Robert Pringle & Sons in 1899 and Robert Pringle & Sons (London) Limited, on 1 Jan 1931. By 1881, 21 Wilderness Row became 42 Clerkenwell Road. The premises rebuilt and named 'Wilderness Works'. The business expanded incorporating 36-42 Clerkenwell Road and 17-20 Great Sutton Street. The company produced a wide range of products, including watches, clocks, fancy silver goods, glassware, electro plated goods and optical items. This is a counter top gold scale made and badged for Robert Pringle & Sons (London), 36-42 Clarkenwell Road London EC1. The scales probably date to the inter-war period. This was the company’s centre of manufacturing and their retail hub. The beautifully enamelled metal components seem to be in good order apart from some chips to the enamelling. The balance bar is embossed ‘CLASS B TO WEIGH 5OZ’ and a customs mark to guarantee the accuracy. The weighing pans are tarnished and carry a heavy patina, they would benefit from cleaning. The scales are supported on a mahogany box that has a drawer to store weights and small tools. The drawer has a Bakelite knob. The wood case has some paint spots. There are no maker marks to the scales. The wood case measures approx. 27cm by 13.5cm by 7.3cm. The support bar extends to a maximum of 27.5cm above the top of the box, the balance bar is 20cm. The scales are offered in good used antique condition. A great collectable set of scales. Please see pictures for more details. Thanks for looking and Happy Bidding!
