Included: Dolly Daily Classic American Dolls U.S. Postage Stamp Series Honors Emma Adams Special Edition How the original doll was made: Yours is a Reproduction! Due to her important place in American doll history, Emma Adams (Mrs. William S. Rultan) of Oswego, New York her been included in the July 1997 release of the Classic American Dolls postage stamp series issued by the U.S. Postal Service. Emma Adams' cloth dolls were first put on sale at Marshall Fields' Department store, and up to the year 1900 every face was hand painted by her. After that time the dolls were painted by commercial artist. The outstanding characteristic of the dolls was the ingenious method of stuffing the first muslin body. First a loose stuffing of fine excelsior material was done, then soft cotton to give a soft surface and form the natural curves of the face. Arms and legs were also stuffed with cotton, and fingers and toes were formed by stitching. This stuffing was accomplished through the use of various sized sticks were fashioned from wheel spokes from her father's carriage shop. The whole figure was then treated with a special sizing of starch and glue. After this dried, the head and limbs were painted flesh color before being turned over to an artist for painting the face. By 1893 Emma Smith's dolls were important enough to be accepted by the Columbian Commission of the Columbian World's Fair at Chicago, where they received a diploma of merit and named the Columbian doll. "Columbia" the original doll of the collection, was used to raise money for children's charities. The doll traveled around the world and raised money for charity wherever she went. She was given free transportation by express and steam companies, and a log book and scrap book were made of her journeys. One of the pages of the scrap book bears the greeting of the future President William Howard Taft, who had just been made governor of the Philippines when she arrived in1902. Here she was lost for two years, having been sent to a native mission school. She was eventually found and slipped of with this clearance from George Bennett. Collector of Customs: This is to certify that Miss Columbia has complied with the customs regulations at this port previous to her departure on the U.S. Army Transport "McClellan". Her baggage has been examined and nothing was found to indicate any intention on her part to defraud the government. Would suggest if she ever makes another trip to these islands she carry more suitable clothing. It don't snow here very often.
