Description: Phenomenal history of the areas around Downtown Syracuse in this collection of (19) different antique postcards issued from the first decade of the 20th century to the 1940s. They are a mix of real photos, fine German lithography, white border and linen types. There are both divided and undivided backs. (11 )have been postally-used and (8) are unused. From an estate. As is common with old paper-based items, there is a slight musty smell to the group. No evidence of water damage. All cards are imaged front and back. All have a dealer price written lightly in pencil on the address side. Without regard to this, I have graded the postcards as if they were trading cards. Each is detailed below as to: Subject, Card stock number where shown, Manufacturer/issuer of card where shown, (foreign country where printed - where not indicated, printed in US), used/unused, postmark info, city/town posted to and condition. 1. Mizpah Hotel and First Baptist Church, opened 1915, was the first structure that combined a church with a hotel. 125 rooms were added above the Gothic church space primarily because the new YMCA that opened nearby did not meet the demand for rooms. It was used as a hotel and later, as rooms for young women. The building still exists today, awaiting repurposing. #836, Wm Jubb Co. Syracuse, unused - G/VG 5. Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception is the mother church of the Roman Catholic Dioceses of Syracuse and the seat of the Bishop of Syracuse. Historic buildings in the background, left to right, are Syracuse Savings Bank, Gridley Building, Onandaga County Savings Bank, and far right a bit of the Wieting Opera House. The Columbus Monument on Columbus Circle, formerly St Mary's Circle, was a gift to the county in 1934 by a group of Italian-American immigrants. History revisionists are still trying to get the monument torn down and the circle renamed, and so far, judges have refused to allow it. #42520, Wm Jubb Co. Syracuse, unused, VG+ 13.
