Description: ANTIQUE PEARL SMALL WATCH FOB CIGAR/CHEROOT CUTTER c.1890s- EARLY 1900s ANTIQUE MOTHER OF PEARL SMALL WATCH FOB CIGAR / CHEROOT CUTTER ~ CIRCA LATE 1800’S EARLY 1900’s This is an Antique Mother of Pearl, small cigar cutter with hidden scissors / watch FOB, used to snip the end of a cigar or cheroot before smoking. This piece has a small loop at the end to be connected to a watch fob chain. This small piece pearl scales measure about 1 1/8” long x 5/8” wide x 5/16” thick and about 1 5/8" long including the end protrusion and attachment ring. This is heavy for its small size; weighing 15 grams or .6 ounce. This piece is unmarked probably made by Sheffield specialty cutlers, although almost identical pieces were copied in Germany. The thick Mother of Pearl scales are slightly rounded at the edges, with German silver liners and 4 small German silver pins. The front has an uninscribed bomb shield escutcheon plate that is inlaid flush with a parser (bow fiddle) like Sheffield cutlers use. The select Mother of Pearl front scale has one invisible to the eye minuscule corner chip and what appears as a crack but is a surface scratch. Note front side appears to have a crack in the pearl but is part of the natural layering of the pearl. The frame is steel with a tiny loop that secures the attachment ring for use as a watch fob with the original end ring. The 2 scissor blades have an internal spring that keeps them in place when closed inside the casing. The steel blades are nickel plated steel and polished, with the sharp blade crescent sharpened from one side. There are 2 small ball finials at the ends intended to grasp and pull the blades out. The blades appear unused with a couple spots of naturally occurred patches of light spidering. When the blades are extended, the button ends of the spring-loaded blades stay open, ready to cut the tip of the cigar or cheroot when squeezed together. This would be perfect for any smoker, cigar, cheroot, watch fob, cigar cutter, tobacco related items or smalls collector; and can still be used today.
