Oil painting on beveled wood board with number 27 on back. It is unsigned and definitely antique and old. I am estimating it may be from the 1600-1700's. Comments and questions are always welcome. Portrait of St. Jerome in contemplation. He appears to be studying a book (Bible) and there is a skull, hourglass and jug of wine on the desk. There are more books on the floor. You can also see his shoes and maybe 2 jugs or vases to the left. He wears a dark robe and has a soulful gaze as he looks at the book and gestures with his fingers. St. Jerome also known as Hieronymus translated the bible from Hebrew and Latin. He converted to Christianity after a youthful period of pursing earthly pleasures. St. Jerome is the patron saint of archaeologists, biblical scholars, librarians. He was a supporter of women in the church and his friend, Paula (a widower with 4 children) also became a saint. Size; 8 1/2” wide x 11 3/4” high, 5/8” thick Condition: darkened, clouded and needs cleaning. normal age wear snd a few dings Note: The photos of the painting were lightened with a photo editor so more details could be seen. It is definitely darkened.
