Description: this is a dramatic antique nautical oil painting that shows a three-masted schooner foundering in very rough seas off the northern Maine rocky cliff coastline - the ship's sails have been lowered due to the heavy wind & it appears that the rear mast has been broken with its sail long gone in the ocean - it appears that the ship's captain has only the rudder to use to steer the ship away from the steep rocky cliffs - the ship is now foundering in the surf which is flowing towards & pounding upon the base of the rocky cliffs - this is a scene which happened all too often with sailing ships trying to navigate along the eastern coast of New England during the 19th century - the incredibly rough ocean was well-painted by the unknown but talented artist who created this painting using various shades of black, gray & off-white colors to contrast with these colors to portray an "angry sea" - in the lower right portion of the painting, the artist added shades of orange color to show rays of sun peeking out from under the heavy storm clouds & reflecting off the high waves - in the upper portion of the painting, we see the thick & dense storm clouds painted in shades of gray covering most of the sky - in contrast to those colors we see on the left the range of colors that the artist used to depict the steep rocky cliffs - the colors ranged from black towards the bottom of the cliffs to shades of orange-red towards the tops of the cliffs - the painting measures 20" x 14" sight size, & is in very good antique condition - it is well-enhanced by a contemporary gilded wooden frame which measures 22" x 16" & is in very good condition - the painting has been professionally cleaned & re-varnished in the recent past to rid the painting's surface of dirt & grit accumulation over the past 125 years to show the true colors that the artist intended -
