Antique Needle Box Print "Queen Victoria’s Osborne House" Le Blond-Baxter 1855

Description: Beautifully framed genuine miniature needle box print entitled “Queen Victoria’s Osborne House, Cowes, Isle of Wight” by LeBlond & Company, London, England, in 1855. According to the New Baxter Society (https://newbaxtersociety.org), in 1835 English printer George Baxter developed a patented process to create affordable high quality color prints. This process used wood and metal color blocks in conjunction with steel plates to produce prints using oil inks. Baxter’s prints were used as color illustrations in books, cards, decorative prints, and pin cushions and needle boxes. Around 1850, Baxter licensed his printing process to several other printers, including Abraham Le Blond & Company. This print may be a “Le Blond-Baxter print,” i.e., a print by Le Blond & Company using Baxter’s plates and blocks), which adorned a needle box. Small boxes holding sewing needles, i.e., needle boxes, were apparently popular in Victorian England from about 1840-1860. This needle box print is unsigned. The frame appears to be made of gold-painted wood and decorative molding possibly made of gesso and/or a composition mixture. The wood frame measures approximately 4 3/4” x 5 5/8" and the needle box print measures approximately 1" x 1 3/4”. The label on the back of the frame indicates the needle box print may have been produced in 1855. “1935 Canada” is written in pencil on the label on the back of the frame, perhaps indicating when this framed print was originally purchased from J. Quinton McKay in Winnipeg, Canada. Estate sale find. The needle box print appears to be in excellent vintage condition, although it has not been examined outside of the frame. The frame appears to be in very good used condition with signs of wear and age, such as scratches, scrapes, nicks, chips, dents, abrasions, and cracks in the decorative molding. There appear to be two small holes on the back sides that may have been used for mounting hardware. The paper backing and label appear to be in “good minus” to good used condition with signs of wear and age, such as fading, yellowing, wrinkles, scratches, scrapes, abrasions, indentations, tears, and rub marks.
