Description: This listing is for an antique betel box or vessel made of wood, tin, lacquer, and glass. It is in the shape of a Burmese sacred goose, or mythical "Hintha bird." Its wings are made of metal, likely tin, and are encrusted with glass. The mirrored glass is clear and blue, though one of its eyes appears pink. The non-gilded areas are in red cinnabar lacquer. Small quantities of betel— areca nut wrapped in betel leaf with other ingredients— were stored in the shallow lacquer compartment. This betel box is damaged in some areas, as seen in the pictures. The gilt is missing in some places, and part of the beak was broken at some point. The bird is not secured to its pedestal base. Even in its current condition, this bird is unique and stunning. It will add visual interest and "brightness" to any room, but it is very fragile and must be handled with care. It measures roughly 11" X 11" and weighs about 2 pounds. I welcome questions, and thanks for looking.
