Description: This rare high-quality 19th-century lockable metal box has a fold-down brass handle at the top and bears a brass riveted escutcheon with a fold-down latch at the front. The exterior of the box retains its original tawny-brown paint which has developed a rich patina over the years. The hinged lid lifts to reveal the original imperial blue paint applied to the interior. As seen in the accompanying photographs. The box is in good condition with no holes or repairs. As an antique, the box shows signs of age including wear/scratching/rust/chips to the exterior and interior paint along with a few dents. The brass handle, escutcheon, and fold-over latch show age related discoloration and general wear but are sturdy and fully functional. The escutcheon bears the impressed words "MACHINE MADE / LEVER / WITH MODERN / IMPROVEMENTS". There is no key for this box, but a metal hollow barrel key is the type for the lock. The description tag from the modern purchase some 30 years ago says “Postal Strong Box Late 1800’s” The box is 10.5" tall and 13.5" wide by 9.5" deep. It is a substantial piece and weighs 5lbs 11oz. This fantastic antique box has a delightfully aged appearance with a wonderfully worn patina and is ideal for display or storage. A terrific antique find! Item sold as is with no warranty or returns! Pictures are of actual item being shipped so please review them carefully. I may not mention all the flaws but I do try to get pictures of anything I see. Please note that due to the value of this item, the shipment will be fully insured.
