Description: This is such a fun little box! Made in Mauchline in Scotland in the second half of the 19th century, it is made from sycamore wood that has been given a a black lacquer finish. The top features a pretty floral transfer with the words ‘With Kind Regards’ and two clasped hands printed alongside. However, this is not the main attraction of this super box. For that, you have to look to the sides of the box which feature ‘The ABC Oracle’, a light-hearted fortune telling parlour game. The two long sides feature questions depicted in gold lettering: ‘Of What Are You Most Fond?’ on one side, and ‘Will You Ever Marry’ on the other. To find an answer to these questions, the player must choose a letter between A and P. For example, choosing the letter J when asked the marriage question results in the answer ‘I’m taking offers’! Inside the box there is a label for Clark & Co’s Anchor Sewing Cottons as well as three partitioned sections for storing reels. The box measures 3.75 inches by 2 inches by 1.5 inches.
