Antique map of the Indian subcontinent with the Philippines and parts ofIndonesia, China, up to Taiwan (Formosa). With the Malay Peninsula, Thailand,Vietnam, Cambodia and parts of Sumatra with Borneo. Seaport towns are mostdensely noted along the coasts of India. The Singapore Strait appears to bemisunderstood as a narrow channel cutting through the southern tip of the MalayPeninsula. Several false lakes are shown, including "Chiamai lacus" the sourceof this is Marco Polo’s writings (c. 1300) and was included on maps for severalhundred years. A European ship sails in the waters south of Macao, and, a Chinese junk sailsin the Sea of Bengal. A large sea monster is to the east (right) and India. Jodocus Hondius (1563-1612) was the founder of the famous 17th century Dutchmap publishing family. Hondius, along with sons Jodocus II and Henricus andson-in-law Johannes Janssonius, was prominent in Dutch cartography. WhenJodocus Hondius acquired the copperplates of the Mercator atlas and decided tore-issue them in 1606, he prepared this map (and about 30 others) for inclusionin the Mercator-Hondius atlas, as it is commonly called. This map is from theedition of 1636 with Middle English text on the verso [Koeman has only oneEnglish edition, 1636]. This map last appeared in a Mercator-Hondius atlas of1636. There were later revised maps of this region included in theMercator-Hondius series of atlases by Henricus Hondius and then JohannesJanssonius from 1638 to c.1680.
