Description: Antique Maasai Tribal Walking Cane. Tribe symbol LION HANDLE. Couple to wed on collar with girl painted with Purity white line on her face. Very good condition and clean. Purchased at an estate sale in Canada. The previous owner's Grand Daughter told me the following about the cane; The cane was made in the mid 1930's. It was made to commemorate a wedding of a couple in the Maasai Tribe in Kenya. The majority of marriages were arranged by parents and the tribe's elders. Girls were typically 12 to 14 years old when wed. The white line on her face symbolized Purity and Hope. The Lion handle is a tribal symbol. The Lion embodied courage, strength and power for the Tribe. Killing a lion was a rite of passage for the boys/men before last four decade's efforts of conservation. Hand carved twisted shaft. Criss-cross collar above the ferule. Couple to wed on the collar. Resting Lion handle. WHITE SPOTS AND STREAKS ARE REFLECTIONS AND GLARE FROM THE LIGHTING. Measures 31 1/4 inches high by 4 1/4 inches wide at handle. This top heavy cane weighs under 2 pounds. No cracks, chips, gouges or stains. I find some light surface scuffs commensurate with light handling, cleaning and storage. This unique and well-made walking cane is clean and ready for service and display. WHITE SPOTS AND STREAKS ARE REFLECTIONS AND GLARE FROM THE LIGHTING. Check out my thousands of other vintage and antique items above, under See other items or in my eBay store.
