Description: Antique Kayserzinn German Aesthetic Period Art Nouveau Pewter PLATE Jugendstil Flowers Iris. Jugendstil or German interpretation of Art Nouveau. It was crafted by Kayserzinn - the most famous German Jugendstil pewter objects manufacturer. At the world exhibitions in Paris (1900), Turin (1902), Dusseldorf and St.Louis (1904), the company enjoyed great success with its "Kayserzinn" or "Kayser pewter", a special lead-free alloy of tin and silver distinguished by its lasting gleam - success which it owed to its outstanding designers: Karl Geyer (1858-1912), Hermann Fauser(1874-1947), Karl Berghof(1881-1967) and others, but their main designer and artistic director was Hugo LEVEN (1874-1956), a name to be compared with that of Liberty's main pewter designer, Archibald KNOX. The decors they designed were inspired mostly by floral French Art Nouveau - the German Jugendstil version of Art Nouveau has yet to appear in early 1900s. It was the Kayser company's aim, through its use of the methods of mass production, to make artistically designed, contemporary stylish objects of daily use (such as candlesticks, ashtrays, lamps, beakers, vases, tea and coffee sets) accessible to a broad selection of the public. These stylish relief flowers with bees and butterflies were the signature design elements of Kayserzinn. This particular tray was designed by Hugo Leven - one of the most interesting Jugendstil designers in Germany. His designs are unique - they are strange and unusual, remaining very modern to the present time. The mark at the bottom reads "Kayserzinn 4097". The tray is in good condition - there is no breaks or repairs, only some age related wear and partial oxidation. It would require some cleaning but I will leave it to the new owner - some people prefer the antique look and patina for the pewter objects, some like to polish them to get a near silver impression it was inteneded to give at the time of manufacturing.
