Description: This is a very beautiful example of hand painted porcelain work by Julius Brauer. This piece dates from 1905-1910 and was painted in a lovely naturalistic style and signed by the artist himself. The bright red-orange poppies stand out against the lush green background of the composition, which is framed by a hand painted gold border with beautiful notched details. The dreamy soft-focusvdesign has a romantic impressionistic quality evocative of soft early morning light. Naturalistic designs like this were very fashionable during this period. The overall condition of the plate is very good. The gold is in great shape and relatively free of rubs or scratches. The artist's brush strokes have some lovely texture, which helps disguise any minimal scratches there are to the surface of the plate. The lip on the back of the plate shows some wear from contact with surfaces, and there are some random spots of wayward glaze on the back from the hand painting process. About Julius H. Brauer Studio Julius H. Brauer immigrated to the US in 1890 and settled in Trenton, NJ, a city known for decorating pottery, before coming to Chicago to join Pickard in 1902. Brauer was noted for his work on intricate Arabesque patterns before moving on to launch his own studio in 1903. His wife Marie Brauer was also a skilled decorator, and over the years, they employed many talented artists with experience at Pickard and other Chicago studios. The company remained in business until 1926.
