Description: It looks like this crate was constructed with square nails (see last photo). This crate is 22 1/2" long, 13 1/2" wide and 13" tall. The paper label is peeling and crumbling somewhat around the edges. Someone put some tape on some of the label to try to hold it on. The hinges are mounted on the crate, but are not attached to the lid. The leather loop to close the crate is ripped at the bottom. Some slats have loosened from their nails. It has a slight musty smell. Joseph Garneau, Jr., associated with the Garneau Cracker Company, one of the largest operations of its kind in the West during the 1880’s. The Dozier Weyl Company was started in 1872 when the two partners bought out the J. Garneau cracker plant located at Sixth and Pine Streets in downtown Saint Louis. By 1888 Mr. Dozier bought out his partner and the company was named the Dozier Cracker Company. This was short lived though, as in 1898 both the Dozier Cracker and the Holmes and Coutts Cracker Company which was in NYC, joined to form the National Biscuit Company, later called Nabisco. Shortly after the founding of the National Biscuit partnership, they launched their new line of crackers. These are still sold all around the world today, best known as Animal Crackers with their distinctive zoo looking boxes.
