Description: Antique Japanese Edo Period Kaji Kabuto Firefighter Helmet. The antique Japanese Naruse shi crest firefighter helmet (火消兜- Kaji Kabuto) Naruse shi clan crest. Edo period (1603-1868). Made of wood, dry lacquer (kanshitsu: a lacquer work technique), metal and fabrics. The Naruse shi (成瀬氏) clan was one of the Japanese clans that were samurai and aristocrats. During the Edo period, they served as the lord of Inuyama Castle and served as a chief retainer for the Owari Domain. After the Meiji Restoration, they were recognized as an independent feudal lord and established the Owari Inuyama Domain. After the abolition of the feudal domains and the establishment of prefectures, they became a baronial family of the nobility, and later a viscount family for their contributions to the Restoration. This firefighter helmet is wooden main material coating with brown dry lacquer and metal part. The Fukigaeshi-吹返 with crests made of metal/brass (The large part that protrudes from the bowl of the helmet on both sides of the face). Inside of helmet is fabric cover. The hole on the top of helmet is "Tehen-天辺". The samurai believed that through the Tehen the spirit of Hachiman, the god of war, could pass into them. For this reason this hole on the kabuto is sometimes colled hachiman-za (八幡座) , literally "the seat of Hachiman". Condition: There are missing parts, cracks and peeling of the lacquer and holes.
