Description: From a local estate auction: I have found three pieces of wonderful hand embroidery. I believe they are all in the Hungarian tradition, and all use red as a featured color. This listing is for a small tablecloth or table topper. It measures 23" square and has about 3” of fancy fringe all around. The center is cotton fabric woven with red bands for a check plaid, forming ~2” squares. On each red junction there is an embroidery of lines radiating out from the center. The red embroidery is a shade darker than the red of the cloth. It forms a network of stars? snowflakes? The embroidery stitch is familiar as our fly stitch but it is used very different from our embroidery traditions. The work is beautifully done - even the back looks good, so I've added some photos of the back too so you can see how it is put together. I have laundered and pressed this to make sure the fabric is sound and that the stitching won't bleed. It is in excellent condition with no stains, spots, or rips, and I observed no bleeding, but I did find one tiny hole at one edge, as shown in the last photo. Still, it looks great and has great charm. Please see my other listings for the other Hungarian embroideries too.
