Description: Antique Harker Pottery Semi-Porcelain Portrait Plate.Made by Harker Pottery of East Liverpool, Ohio circa 1890-1900. Off-white with gold trim. Marked on bottom with bow and arrow mark.Portrait of Princess Eugenia transfer decal. Princess Eugenia was a daughter of Maximilian de Beauhamais, 3rd Duke of Leuchtenberg (Bavaria) and his wife Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna of Russia. Although she was a member of the French House of Beauhamais, she was born and raised in her mother's native country, Russia. The plate also has printed advertising on it that reads:"COMPLIMENTS OFKURTZ & SHULZE,DEALERS INGENERAL MERCHANDISE.SPENCER, S. D." Merchants in the 19th Century sometimes gave gifts to regular customers for Christmas and other occasions. This plate was likely a gift like this. Also, the portrait on the plate is off-center. Typically, they would be centered on the plate. There are also some odd marks (creases) in the plate. This suggests that someone was learning to put the transfer decal on and didn't do such a good job. So, this place would have been a "second" and that is probably why it was offered to merchants as gifts. Another interesting fact, the merchant, Kurtz & Shulze, was located in Spencer, South Dakota. Spencer, South Dakota is a very small town, about 6 square blocks, and currently has a population of about 135 people. It is interesting that a merchant selling fine china would be located in such a small rural town. So, with the off-center portrait and the advertising of a small merchant, this plate would be from a very limited edition and maybe one-of-a-kind remaining. Very good condition. No chips or cracks. Crazing in glaze commensurate with age. Wear to transfer decal portrait and gold rim.The plate is 9.5 inches in diameter.
