Description: Antique Handmade Primitive Hand-Forged Iron GAFF HOOK Harpoon Hay Thief Circa 1800's This was the description given to us from the estate: "Antique wrought iron ships gaffs have a curved barb so you could hook and release easily. The 1800's hand forged iron gaff in this auction has a harpoon point with a barb that would hold. This particular style gaff is also known as a Pilot Whale Gaff. However, we believe that this piece may actually be what is referred to as a Hay Thief. A Hay Thief is a primitive farming tool used to impale a hay bale to examine or test the internal hay within the bale. The tool is thrust into the center of the bale and then pulled straight out, bringing with it a sample from the center of the hay bale. It is then examined to determine the hay's viability. See pics for measurements. Look at pics carefully and buy as is.
