Description: Antique French Gien Porcelain Plate, Signed “Porcelaine Opaque Gien”, Commemorating the History of Joan of Arc, 1860-1871 This antique French porcelain plate bears embossed marks “B” and “6” on the bottom, signifying the date of manufacture, along with the impressed mark of the manufacturer “Porcelaine Opaque G.G. & Cie, Gien, Médaille à l’Exposition universelle de 1855”. This mark is that of Geoffroy, Guérin and Company, manufacturers of the famous Gien porcelain between 1860 and 1871. The Gien porcelain works, located near Orleans, were founded in 1821 by the British entrepreneur Thomas Hulm and later taken over by Geoffroy. As shown by the signature, the Gien porcelain works were honored with meals at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1855. This plate is the tenth in a series created to commemorate the history of Joan of Arc - the phrase “Histoire de Jeanne d’Arc” appears at the top of the central scene. The central scene is entitled “Jeanne d’Arc est faite prisonnière à Compiègne” (Joan of Arc is taken prisoner at Compiègne). It illustrates the capture of Joan in Compiègne, north of Paris, in 1430 by the Burgundians who handed her over to the English. A beautiful border of flowers and leaves encircles the central scene. This plate is in good condition with the exception of some traces of use, slight scratches and a chip along the border. This exceptional antique plate will bring a fascinating bit of 19th century French history into your decor and would be an excellent addition to your collection!
