Description: Up for sale is a very unusual historical flask / bottle dating to around 1860. It's a flattened oval shape with an outward flare towards the wider shoulders, with a small neck having a thick applied/tooled solid glass handle attached low on the neck and at the shoulder. The front is embossed with a left-facing horse inside of an angled square picture frame with "FLORA TEMPLE" above it, and "HARNESS TROT 2. 19 3/4" below; the square frame juts out from the body of the flask, and there's embossed detail above it depicting the picture frame's hanger and a dangling tassel. The color is not easy to describe but it's somewhere in the copper/apricot puce realm: brown with a red-orange tone, and with great bubbly glass texture too. It's got an applied ring collar. This flask is charted as GXIII-24 in the McKearins' "American Bottles and Flasks and their Ancestry", its listing can be found on page 660. It's 8 1/2" tall and 2 1/2" wide across the base. It's a placeholder flask in displayable condition with a good sparkly surface, never buried, but with major damage: a crack stemming from both the upper and lower handle attachment points traveling down into the body. The lower crack travels 3" down along the front right side and has a leg going back 1" to the reverse also, while the upper one travels a short distance up in the neck. Both have slight chipping/roughness at the attachment points. These stress cracks are a typical fatal flaw in early glass when handles are applied at the glass factory like this, and the roughness suggests this damage happened in making, due to a temperature difference in the glass. Still, a mint example in this color would probably cost about $750 so I am hoping someone can get some enjoyment out of this one until a mint example comes along.
