Description: DESCRIPTION: This is a mid-19th Century (probably published between 1842-1849) hand-colored steel plate engraving of Harvard University, Cambridge, MA, depicting a view of the Harvard University in early 18th Century from the Peabody street (it shows the typical 18th century view of the campus - - - the Holden Chapel on the left, Harvard Building in the middle, University Building in the background and Massachusetts Building on the right, with some folks strolling on the street and a rider on a horse on Peabody street, a dirt road back then). The original artist was A. J. Davis. The engraver was D. Kimberly. This steel plate engraving was based on their original work, and published by J & F Tallis, London and New York, during mid-19th century, with original hand coloring. They added a few charming vignettes to the original image - - "Puritans Landing in America" (lower left), "Laying the Foundation Stone of Harvard University 1638" (lower right), a couple of students at the left and right, and some chemistry apparatus and a globe at the top. The full sheet dimensions are approximately 25" x 19 3/8". The partnership with Frederick Tallis lasted for only about 7 years (1842 to 1849). His work is particular well known for the lavish decorations and ornamentation, which are seen in this beautiful antique engraving. Condition issues: This is an antique engraving from the mid-19th century, and has a few condition issues consistent with its age - - a few edge tears, rough edges, nicks, small missing corner tips on the right, handling creases and folds etc - - all these edge issues can be covered by a suitable window mat when framed.
