Description: We are pleased to offer a lot of 40 medallions and some miscellaneous fragments that were part of a dossal made in England. (A dossal, aka dossel, is defined as a cloth hanging vertically from the back of an altar.) They were found with a note that describes them as having been used in the "old church" which refers to a time prior to a fire in 1932. Someone spent a lot of time rescuing these 41 medallions intact - some whole, some seamed in the center - as well as a small lot of fragments and a bit of thread. They are done in gold metallic thread on ecru ribbed silk and lined with ecru linen. Fabulous for restorations or crafting - you won't see another lot like this anytime soon! The Trinity Church in Geneva, New York, was established in 1806 and provided the first Episcopal services held in Geneva. In 1808, a wooden church was constructed at 520 S Main Street which was replaced in 1844 with a magnificent stone cathedral. A fire in 1932 destroyed much of the interior but it was restored and continued until 2016. At that time, it was determined by the parish members that the building was too costly to maintain so the building has been sold to developers. Many items were deaccessioned in a recent auction and we are pleased to offer textiles and other items from this exquisite church. Condition: Overall very good - please see photos. There is no evidence of smoke or fire damage. Size: A complete medallion measures 6" x 10".
