Description: Antique oak double inkwell & pen rest stand. Commemorative fountain/dip pen and inkwell caddy documenting the design and construction of the "The New Clinic" in Rochester, Minnesota in the 1920's. The design was documented on a 1922 postcard. Initial construction, without the bell tower addition, proceeded in the later 1920's. Later this clinic was renamed The Plumber Building in honor of Dr. Plummer when the Mayo Clinic opened in 1955. This inkstand caddy has a 6" x 10" oak base with two 7 1/4" pen rest slots and two empty inkwell or ink bottle slots, both providing secure placement of glass inkwells or bottles up to 1 1/4" across. The wood base stands on 4 small hard rubber feet attached by silver metal pins. A half-circle silver handle in the center loops above a very detailed silver cast metal bulldog with a shield covering his back. The dog's shield is embossed with a very detailed image of "The New Clinic", along with "The New Clinic Rochester, Minn." These pieces are probably silver plate on brass. This type of inkwell/pen rest was often used on a partners desk, allowing two people to access the inkwells and fountain pens. This wonderful old wooden inkstand commemorating the "New Clinic" in Rochester, MN is in excellent antique condition. A VERY RARE & UNIQUE PIECE WITH A GREAT HISTORY!
