Antique Dated 1865 English Silver Plate CAMEL EPERGNE Centerpiece w Crystal Bowl Antique Dated 1865 English Silver Plate CAMEL EPERGNE Centerpiece w Crystal Bowl This beautiful antique Victorian epergne/compote/centerpiece, or pillar candle holder without the bowl, is in very nice condition. The epergne is about 9" tall by 9" wide, and features three seated camels and a removeable top bowl. The piece is done in wonderfully fine and ornate detail. The bowl is cut glass or crystal and while it fits well, I feel like the foot is slightly small for the top of the epergne. The bowl does have some fine scratches, a few fleabite chips, and one missing peak at the rim (see pictures). The epergne itself has a few light scratches and a bit of removeable tarnish but the plating is remarkably good for a 160-year-old piece. From what I can tell this line of epergnes was reproduced by Elkington, Sheffield, and others in the 1920's during the Egyptian Revival movement that followed the discovery of King Tut's tomb, but this is the original model. The English registration lozenge/ diamond is on every single part of the epergne, and the camel slots are numbered to correspond with a particular camel. The lozenge indicates that the year manufactured was 1865, the month of March, on the 30th day, and the bundle number of 3. There is no makers mark that I can find. I believe these camel centerpieces were meant to be convertible as they disassemble easily, and I've seen a couple of different versions of this seated camel epergne- one version has a longer center stem with a bowl on top, another is a candelabra. The second to last picture is of a candelabra that I believe would fit this camel base (not included, not my listing). The last picture is the only other example of this epergne that I could find currently for sale online. In spite of any flaws this is a beautiful piece that displays wonderfully.
