As an art form, only ceramics cover the entire forty-five century span of Chinese history. More than any other material, fired clay has served the needs and satisfied the aesthetic tastes of all segments of Chinese society, and the Chinese contribution to ceramic art is one of uncontested brilliance. Indeed, in terms of their sheer production, technical innovation, artistic refinement, aesthetic diversity and global impact, the Chinese can claim the world's longest and foremost ceramic tradition. The origin of ceramics technology dates back 6000 years to the Neolithic period in China, and the related technologies and skills were continuously developed throughout Chinese history. Over the course of many dynasties, ceramic techniques slowly evolved. Innovations with under glazes, colors, materials including metallic ores, all propelled Chinese ceramics into a highly prized commodity for the imperial courts throughout China, and ultimately, for export. Ceramics fall under two major categories: low-fired earthenware (pottery), fired at 1000 c.; and high-fired stoneware and porcelain, fired at temperatures ranging from 1200 - 1350c. Pottery was also valued in the Far East as elsewhere for its craftsman qualities, as attested by this vase, which reflects a special artistic sensibility which artisans bestowed upon everyday objects, showing as it does the powerful symbolism of imagery in Chinese culture and their association with sacred rituals. This superb Water Pitcher features the legendary Chinese dragon. The Chinese dragon is comparable as the symbol of the Chinese race itself, and Chinese around the world, proudly proclaim themselves "Lung Tik Chuan Ren" (Descendents of the Dragon), symbolizing as it does power and excellence, valiance and boldness, heroism and perseverance, nobility and divinity. The pitcher measures 7.5 inches in diameter by 7.5 inches in height (19.0 cm by 19.0 cm). It is in very good condition, including rubbing, minor chips and scratches. It dates probably to the late 19th early 20th century. A superb example of a very distinctive style of Chinese ceramic art, it would make a fine collector’s piece and is guaranteed authentic.
