Description: ANTIQUE CAULDON Ltd COLUMBIA STAR (?) PATTERN BLUE & WHITE PLATE c1905-1920 Click images to enlarge Description A blue & white plate made by Cauldon depicting a pattern called Columbia Star (minus the stars). The original pattern was registered by John Ridgway on October 20th 1840 and has a border consisting of stars. The pattern was introduced to celebrate the election of William Henry Harrison as the 9th president. He had previously been Minister Plenipotentiary to Gran Columbia in 1828, hence the pattern name. This pattern was registered on May 17th 1881, some forty years later than the original pattern. The log cabin scene shown on this plate depicts the humble early years of Harrison, and this is perhaps him behind the plow. A woman and two children sit outside the cabin while a man chops wood. A flagpole in the background flies a pennant flag. The plate is in very good condition with no chips or cracks. Impressed diamond registration mark and 'Cauldon Place England'. Also 'Cauldon England' in blue. Cauldon were in business at Cauldon Place, Shelton, Hanley, Staffordshire from 1905 to 1920 so this plate was made during that period.
