Description: Primitive made hanging spring scale that measures 0lbs to 24lbs. The construction is cast iron cylinder with cast iron ends that are fastened with brass pins. I say primitive since you can see the casting ridges made by the forms. The scale plate is brass marked in one pound increments & fastened with brass pins. It appears to have the original hanging ring & hook. The spring is intact & the scale works smoothly but as for accuracy that is unknown. I don't see any marks identifying the maker. Researching this item I did find a few similar scales - none of them have any identifying marks either. This appears to pre-date scales made during the Civil war period - spring scale design was invented in @ 1770 by Richard Salter & was in widespread use by 1830's.
