Description: This listing is for an antique broad / hewing axe that sports a 6.5 inch single bevel blade. This old piece came out of an estate sale that had many late 1800’s and early 1900’s items. This axe is in good “restored” condition for its age and intended use (see pictures). It was initially head only when it came into my possession. A night in Evapo Rust and a trip on the wire wheel showed partial markings on the upper cheek beveled side. The visible markings were “AST” which I believe were originally “CAST STEEL” (see pictures). The head does have light pitting throughout but took a good edge when sharpened (see pictures). The handle was a doner from an old axe head I had many years ago, with very good grain orientation (see pictures). There are some very old burn marks on the handle a few inches from the head (see pictures). It was cut, sanded and fitted to the broad / hewing head, set up for a right handed user (see pictures). The wedge was my first attempt at using soft wood and only sealed with boiled linseed oil. After a coat of stain, the entire axe was treated with the boiled linseed oil as well. Comes with a leather sheath that was made with some scraps I had on hand and some new Chicago screws in place of rivets (see pictures). Would make a great addition to any axe collector's wall. Or implement it into your homesteader arsenal and get to making that log cabin. Please refer to pictures for measurements and to judge conditions for yourself.
