Description: This is an antique brass vinaigrette case. It has been disputed that this was a different type of case such as a cigarette case, calling card case, etc. but after several replies from antique dealers they all agree it has to be a vinaigrette. Vinaigrettes are small boxes with an internal hinged grill that would have originally contained a sponge. These sponges would have been soaked in vinaigrette oil. Held up to one's nose, its pungent aroma would have cut through the unpleasant smells encountered on the street. This belonged to my mother. For years as children we thought it was a cigarette case. It was never used. It was something she purchased as a young woman at an antique store because she thought it was pretty. She used it to store jewelry pieces in. There are some patina spots on it as shown in the photos particularly on the back side. The clasp is a pressure hinge so as soon as the button is pressed it pops all the way open for filling as shown in the video. The scroll work is lovely, very detailed. All sales are final. Please ask any questions prior to purchase. Thanks for looking.
