Description: This beautiful Stratton Brothers framing level dates from the late 1800s or very early 1900s and originally belonged to my great uncle Adolf Johnson, who was a machinist for the Northern Pacific railroad in Tacoma, Washington and who also worked as a carpenter and cabinet maker. The level is stamped in several places, both in the wood and on one of the brass ends, with his name "A.W. JOHNSON." This is a good working level and, although showing some signs of use, is in surprisingly nice cosmetic condition as well, especially when considering that it is well over a hundred years old. As can be seen in the photos, there are some scratches and there are some dings in the brass edges as would be expected but none serious. The wood is in good shape with no gouges. Even the original oiled finish is intact. There are some paint spatters and splotches, both on the wood and on the brass, and there is some corrosion and staining in a few places on some of the brass. The screws that hold the brass pieces in place are original black steel and, although intact and still firmly attached, are a little rusty. I'm not sure of the type of wood. When I first looked it over, I thought it was rosewood and walnut but I have seen some levels similar to this one advertised as being made of cherry wood. Not being very familiar with cherry wood, I just can't say - that may well be what it is. In any case, it is really pretty wood. If you are a collector of these tools, you will probably know. This is the nicest original unrestored Stratton Brothers level of this vintage that I have seen. I hope to find this family heirloom a good home in the hands of someone who can appreciate it for what it is and who will take good care of it for years to come.
