Description: Beautiful 19th century romantic American interior genre oil on canvas featuring brother and sisters gazing at a small suspended fishbowl to the right. In the background sitting on an armchair, knitting, is presumably their mother next to the fireplace. The artist has done a masterful job depicting the sumptuous interior of this upper middle-class or wealthy family’s parlor (possibly from New York). The use of raking light coming through the large window, hitting the leaves on the ivy surrounding the fishbowl is remarkable! Clearly painted by a professional artist, almost certainly listed. Sharp realistic details on the clothing, the furnishings, the rug, and even the periodical on the rug is outstanding and highly reminiscent of the work of Seymour Guy. Within the scene itself, the seascape painting and pendant below it are miniature works of art in themselves. The complex and colorful floral rug pattern is expertly depicted. The warmth and composition of this painting, along with the inclusion of goldfish, make this charming painting, especially rare and interesting. Overall, the impression this fine oil on canvas makes on the viewer is one filled with life, exuding peace and serenity. This is especially evocative given its date of creation, the year the US Civil War ended (1865). On the lower left, it is monogrammed. I was not able to decipher it however, I believe the letters are JG and O. There is a fishtail on the J, which is a hallmark of Guy’s monogram. I’m not able to tie it back to him, however at this time. This painting is definitely worthy of further research. The frame is a work of art – it features a tulip or flower themed motif around the outer perimeter, and is in outstanding condition with only minor flaws. Normally, frames from this era have experienced significant degradation however, this one has been kept and maintained lovingly for over 150 years by one family. Undoubtedly a skilled and well-known FrameMaker in either New York or Philadelphia. Only a partial label exists on the top. Overall measurements are 25.25 x 29.25 (in.); Canvas/Image size is 16 x 20 (in.). Condition: The condition of the painting is excellent. The varnishing is crackled, and a bit dull so it could use a cleaning, and/or a re-varnishing. It appears to have been professionally conserved and relined at some point within the last 20 to 30 years. Retains a faint black stenciling on the upper stretcher, which could be an old auction stencil on the top of the frame. There is the remnants of a label, which is hard to make out. Will be carefully and professionally packaged prior to shipment and will be tracked and insured (with signature required upon delivery). Cannot deliver to PO boxes.
