Description: ORIGINAL PASTEL PAINTING I took the wood backing off to see if there was anything behind It & found this very old tintype stuck onto the back of the canvas along with the “Exposition Universelle De 1855” Marking I can only assume that this man is the Artist that did the Pastel Painting!! What other reason would it be hiding underneath the wood frame backing for many years. I just slid him into the bottom right corner(see photo #3) of the frame so he can be displayed with his beautiful Artwork He looks like a very interesting character!! Tintype Photograph is 3.5” Tall by 2.5” Wide Frame 24 inches wide 31.5 inches tall by 2.5 inches deep It is stamped clearly on the back of the pastel: [Exposition Universelle De 1855-Mention Honorable-Papier, Carton, Chassis, Toiles, ANTI-PONCE, pour le pastel, P.L. Brevete' Paris MARQUE DE'POSE'E] After doing some research. I found out that it would have been painted and commissioned in France at the Universelle Exposition. Artist from all over came to paint for the Exposition and some of them were selected as Honorable Mention...This one was. It is a beautiful seascape pastel with great color. It is in what I believe to be the original frame. Afterwards I added acid free tape to help secure the painting back in place Circa 1855 Paris Worlds Fair Scenic Coastal Seascape Bishops Old Head Maine What I love about this painting is the Large Rock on the left resembles an Old Face & the tall skinny rock in the middle is looking at back at each other OR maybe a Wolf howling at the moon. It’s great that two people can look at the same painting on the wall at the same time and see different things.
