Description: Antique 1918 Group of Women Workers Wearing Work Clothes and Overalls Navy Ship Yard Military Suffrage Movement and WW1 Era 5x7 Vintage Original Gelatin-Silver Photograph RARE VHTF This is a known photograph, found it in 2 articles online where a cropped lighter blacks non glossy version of the photo appears to have been printed in a newspaper at one time and the online articles used the photo to reference women standing up for the right to wear trousers during WWI instead of dresses, which was a big deal at the time according to the articles. Photo is labeled "Navy Yard" 1918 on the back. The year prior in 1917 the Navy started to allow women, called Yeomen, to fulfill non combat positions within the Navy like clerical work, radio operators and truck drivers. Womens enlistment in the Navy during this time helped pave the way for future women in the military and to the 19th Amendment being passed several years later in 1920 giving women the right to vote. This is an original photo which was obtained out of an estate sale in the state of Washington back in 2022. Will be well protected for shipment.
