Description: Highly Detailed Antique-1917 "Appeal to the Great Spirit" IVOREX Signed & Dated Handcrafted by Arthur Osborne Wall Plaque. Made in England. A Fabulous Piece of Art Work Depicting a Native American Indian on Horseback. Rich in Texture with Raised Relief. Arthur Osborne was born in Ospringe, a village near Faversham, Kent, the son of a book and print seller in 1855. The boy showed early artistic talent and went to South Kensington Art School in London. He subsequently emigrated to Canada, but settled in America, working as a designer for the J and J G Low Art Tile Comapny of Boston, Massachusetts. He married there but returned to Kent in 1898 to found the Osborne Ivorex company producing three-dimensional plaques and other decorative plaster of paris knickknacks in a business that went on to thrive and become a major employer, particularly paintresses drawn from the local population. Osborne produced highly detailed copies carved into clay which were used as masters to make moulds for the plaster of paris. After painting, the plaques were given their distinctive "ivory" finish by dipping them in the heart paraffin wax which was then buffed to give them a dull sheen. Marked/Stamped with the Original "A Osborne" along with "Copyright 1917" & "Made in England" on the Bottom of the Frame. Back of Frame is Stamped "IVOREX" "Copyright in Great Britain Canada and U.S.A.". "Arthur Osborne" "Made in England". (Please See Photos). Original Wire Hardware on Back of Plaque for Convenient Wall Hanging. Wall Plaque Measures: H: 8.625" W: 6.375" Wall Plaque is in Very Good Condition Considering it's Ripe Age of 107!
