Description: Free eBay listing template designed by dewiso.com Antique 1880's SV Eskdale Ship's Journal British Vessel Great Content! This amazing antique ship's journal contains roughly 140 handwritten entries starting in October of 1883 and ending in March of 1884. Written onboard the SV Eskdale, as it traveled between Liverpool and Portland (Dorset) and containing multiple entries by Captain G. Currie , with each entry taking up almost exactly the 16 lines allotted for it, the entires generally start with a one-sentence weather report for the day, then move into interesting personal, and sometimes rather emotional thoughts, stories and gossip. They range from every day life on the ship, such as "The boys have just caught a large albatross ...," "One has to keep a lookout for sharks, like all sailors there's nothing I dread so much," and "They call the man of the wheel all the vile names they can lay their tongues to." to much more personal thoughts such as "What an awful thing self conceit is, it's like consumption, when once you get it, it sticks to you ... one doesn't die from it so easily." A really interesting read, and a rather unusual item, it measures roughly 13-1/8" x 11-1/4" and comes in a modern protective slipcase. The covers shows some wear (this was actually written on the ship in the late 1800's!) but nothing major, as shown in pics. There is some spotting and foxing to the pages, but they are complete with no major damage, rips, tears, etc. The binding is solid and everything is intact. A really neat item and a real piece of British sailing history! Don't miss this, we don't come across stuff like this very often!! Please look at photos carefully for best judge of condition.
