Description: Description: This is an excellent work for those who are interested in authentic antique Japanese lacquerware artifacts. This is an extremely rare (difficult to find) antique Japanese lacquerware "Negoro-Nuri" incense container (a.k.a. Kogo in Japanese). "Negoro" is the name of the place as well as the temple situated there. It is 100 Km south east from Kyoto. "Nuri" means coated or covered by Japanese lacquer. Authentic Negoro-Nuri lacquerware works were made in late 16th century ~ early 17th century in Negoro. Only very few of them remains until now, though you must have seen many Negoro-Nuri-looks-like works made afterwords. As you can see form the photos, the repair was made on this incense container using black Japanese lacquer. It seems the repair was made sometime in Edo period (1603 ~ 1867). It is in good condition as a Japanese lacquerware work made in 17th century or a bit earlier. The wooden box is so-called "Awase-Bako" made to protect the incense container after WW II.
