Antique (100+ Years Old) Henry Poole Savile Row Bespoke Formal Wool Topcoat 40L

Description: For your consideration is the rarest of the rare, a Henry Poole formal topcoat that is over 100 years old, made for the governor of Massachusetts, Samuel Walker McCall. There is no label with the exact date of make. However, as shown on the dual London/Paris Poole label, it would be between 1911 -when an outpost of the firm was established on Rue Tronchet- and McCall's death in 1923. Handmade on Savile Row in sturdy black wool, this vintage beauty is styled with a single-breasted, four button fly front (hidden buttons), flap and ticket pockets. Its formal nature is denoted by its satin lapels and covered buttons. It also has a magnificent roped and puffed sleevehead that isn't apparent in the pictures with high armholes to complement the trim silhouette. There are no sleeve buttons, so this coat may have been a hybrid of sorts, worn over formal day dress as well as evening dress. Please note: this garment is from an estate and is listed as is and as shown. Any cleaning, repair or modification is the responsibility of the buyer. This garment could be in a museum and cared for by a curator or worn/displayed by a collector. It isn't delicate, but as with any clothing that old there will be surface issues; most notably, the four small holes on the front. I don't believe these were moth holes given the exact spacing, but I cannot be sure. (I am not an archivist, but one could be consulted to make sure.) There are small holes in the back bottom as shown in the last photo that are subtle as well as a thinning of the satin lapel in a spot by the collar. The lower BIN price is reflective of these issues. Overall, the coat is in fine condition for its age and the lining is completely intact and very clean. Since the coat was bespoke, the 40 long size is an estimation. Mr. McCall seemed to be a tall, thin man who was a 38-39 long by today's standards.
