Description: ANRI ELSINORE MID-CENTURY MODERN, MEDIEVAL INSPIRED, MINIMALIST CHESS SET. in near mint condition in its' original Walnut (?) case. The chess pieces were hand-carved in Anri's workshop for a brief time in the early 1960's. Designed by Arthur Elliott, who also designed the Anri Universium Space Age Chess Set and the extremely rare Modern Staunton Chess Set. The name Elsinore comes from Shakespeare's Hamlet. Elsinore Castle (actually Kronberg Castle) in the town of Elsinore, Denmark was named in Shakespeare's play as Hamlet's home. The Elsinore chess pieces are hand carved from Maple and Teak and are lightly weighted. Each side is in their own fitted tray. the bottom tray is fixed inside the Walnut case and the nested top tray is removable. All hardware, both the miniature piano hinge and the latch are made of solid brass. There is a light tan padded fabric lining inside the lid of the case, which measures 14-1/4" x 8-3/4" x 3-1/4".
