Woodcut is the art of engraving images or texts on wooden plates to achieve a relief effect. The name derives from the Greek words for wood (xylon) and carving (graphe). The process for this printmaking technique involves carving texts or images into the wooden plate by hand using gouges or burins. Ink is then applied to the block, and pressing it against a support (usually paper or fabric) produces a print of the relief. There are two basic woodcut techniques: with the grain, where the engraving is done in the direction of the wood fibers, and against the grain, where it is done perpendicular to the fibers. De la utilización de la madera y de la forma de trabajarla es de donde procede su nombre en griego: xilón, madera y graphe, grafía, esculpir o grabar.El procedimiento para esta técnica de impresión consiste en tallar a mano o con gubias o buriles , textos o imágenes sobre la plancha de madera. Después, se impregna con tinta el taco y presionando contra un soporte (normalmente papel o tela) se obtiene la impresión del relieve. Existen dos técnicas básicas de xilografía: a la fibra o al hilo, en la que el grabado se hace en dirección de las fibras de la madera, y a la testa o a contrahilo, en la que se hace en dirección contraria. Esta pieza en xilografía, aun sin firma y edición se asume que corresponde a una obra cubana, por la imagen representacional del personaje político, y la arquitectura descrita.
