Description: Half-plate tintype of a two young men, one a Civil War soldier. Identification on the back reads, "Wilhelm Abel died at St. Louis of cholera about 18 yrs old + his cousin, right". After some research I couldn't find any record of a Wilhlem or William Abel of around this age who died in1860s, but I did find a soldier named Jerome Abel, born 1843 in Pennsylvania, who died of cholera in the notorious Andersonville prison in Georgia on June 29, 1864. ... so the writer of the note might have some info confused.. wouldn't be an uncommon thing. Jerome's military record is at the bottom of this listing.Tintype is UNCASED behind original mat and cover glass. It's in overall VG antique condition, with some kind of surface wear in the background above the boy on the left's shoulder.Boxed shipping.Name: Jerome AbelEnlistment Age: 19Birth Date: abt 1843Enlistment Date: 25 Feb 1862Enlistment Place: Harrisburg, PennsylvaniaEnlistment Rank: PrivateMuster Date: 25 Feb 1862Muster Regiment: Company F, 54th Pennsylvania InfantryMuster Information: EnlistedImprisonment Date: 2 Feb 1864Imprisonment Place: Patterson Creek, West VirginiaDate of Death: 29 Jul 1864Place of Death: Andersonville Prison, GeorgiaCause of Death: Died of Disease POWSide of War: UnionSurvived War?: NoWas POW?: YesComplexion: LightEye Color: BlueHair Color: LightHeight: 5 ft., 6 inchesResidence Place: Northampton County, PennsylvaniaOccupation: FarmerBurial Place: Andersonville, GeorgiaCemetery: Andersonville National CemeteryCemetery Plot Number: 2648Title: History of Pennsylvania Volunteers, 1861-1865; National Archives: Index to Federal Pension Records; Roll of Honor: Names of Soldiers Who Died in Defense of the Union; PA State Archives: Civil War Veterans' Card File 1861-1865; SUVCW 7936A
