Description: The Analectic Magazine, Containing Selections from Foreign Reviews and Magazines, of such articles as are most valuable, curious, or entertaining. Philadelphia: Moses Thomas, 1813. Two volume set. Contemporary leather, skillfully restored at some point by J. Macdonald Company. Marbled endpaeprs (with text from an edition of Foxe's Book of Martyrs faintly visible). 540, 524 pp. Each volume with engraved title page; volume I with printed title page. Volume I contains January - June 1813, and volume II July - December, 1813. As the title notes, this is a collection of articles, reviews, and letters from European magazines, including theater reviews, poetry, travel, and more. There seems to be much of nautical interest - the first volume has biographies (with accompanying portraits) of US Navy officers Isaac Hull and Stephen Decatur, while the second volume has similar biographies/engravings of James Jones, William Lawrence, William Bainbridge, and Oliver Hazard Perry (from not long after his victory at the Battle of Lake Erie(. Some rubbing, scuffing, scratching, and wear to boards. The spines have been nicely rebacked, with original spine labels laid down. Older ownership signature to first blank in each volume. Another owner's name in pencil to engraved title in each volume. Volume I with the first owner's name inked to engraved title and printed title, with some additional writing to first page of text. Foxed and toned throughout, with occasional smudges, small stains, dog-eared pages, and small chips/tears at page edges. The Hull engraving has some paper repairs to verso.
