Description: Pan American Airways’ service cutbacks in the Caribbean during its financial difficulties opened the way for other U.S. airlines to fill the voids. American Airlines successfully applied for nonstop routes from New York to Jamaica (Montego Bay and Kingston), Guadeloupe (Pointe a Pitre) and Martinique (Fort de France), and arranged philatelic recognition for the inaugural flights. This cover was carried on the April 2, 1977 inaugural Foreign Air Mail Route 26 flight from the United Nations Post Office in New York to Fort de France, Martinique (where it was backstamped) and is listed in the Foreign Air Mail Flights (FAM) Section of The American Air Mail Catalogue as F26-110U.
