Description: Made in Italy by Alessi Co. from extremely durable, rust and corrosion-resistant 18/10 chromium/nickel stainless steel, blue handle, mirror finish, a rare early version with stainless knob and pull ring on the top. Its elegant design is a contrast of materials and concepts—mirror-polished full stainless-steel body and bottom, a blue soft polyamide thermoplastic resin ergonomically functional handle set off by red beads, communicate that it is cooler to the touch, the faux rivet details around the base give it an industrial look and strength. The wide base (8.5 inches) is efficient making the water boil faster, yet the singing bird, makes it seem playful. It was purchased from a store in Reston Virginia in about 1986 or 87. Designed by Michael Graves, an American, the iconic kettle can be found in the permanent collections of museums and international institutions all over the world, including the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Australian National Gallery, and the Museum of Design and Fashion in Lisbon. Made thousands of cups of tea over nearly 40 years in addition to serving as a watering can for house plants we hate to see the elegant kitchen accessory go but it should be viable for a least another 40 years Excellent vintage condition with no nicks, dents, leaks, deep scratches, baked-on grease, or hard-water deposits, and the handle is like new condition. It, however, lacks the bird whistle that was accidentally discarded after cleaning a few years ago (available from Amazon or eBay). It also exhibits light surface scratches to the mirror surface from nearly 40 years of daily washing and drying. It seems probable that some type of stainless-steel polish and a little buffing would remove them. “Swedish Death Cleaning” (decluttering) and deep retirement, with consequent lack of space, force the disposal of our lifetime accumulation of interesting items from our pet- and smoke-free home.
