Description: Photographer: Peter Bergheim, Jerusalem (attribution) Title: Bethany, Palestine Date: 1860s Medium: Albumen print not mounted Size of Image: 7 3/8 x 9 3/8 inches Size of Mount: na Condition: Rich tonal image, light handling marks, tear at left edge center.. Other: Peter Bergheim was the son of a German Jew active as a pharmacist in Jerusalem who converted to Christianity and was a member of the London Jews’ Society. This makes Peter one of the earliest converted Jews practicing photography in the region. He appears to have been active from about 1863 to 1873. The painter Frederic Church met Bergheim in 1870 on his visit to the middle east and in a correspondence to William H. Osborn, railroad tycoon and lifelong patron of Church, he wrote, “If you hear of an exhibition of views in Syria and Palestine by the brothers Bergheim…go and see them…Their views are splendid.” This is a fine, early view of the village of Bethany in Palestine.
