Description: Allan Haines Lockheed [1889 1969] was an American aviation engineer, Early Bird and business executive who was one of the founding fathers of aviation design and production. Lockheed completed his first flight in 1912 and in 1915, he opened a flying concession in San Francisco, flying paying customers over the bay. With the money earned from the flying tours he founded the Alco Hydro-Aeroplane Company in 1916, which later became the Lockheed Corporation and is now known as the Lockheed Martin Corporation. His first plane was a twin engine F-1 flying boat which was built in a rented garage, with the assistance of a young 20-year old John K. Northrop. Upon the opening of World War I, he secured a contract with the U.S. Navy to build a quantity of his flying boats and also set a record flight in April of 1918, flying 181 miles from Sants Barbara to San Diego. After the war he entered the small aircraft market with a highly successful S-1 Sport Biplane which had foldable wings for storge in a garage. Listed for auction is the rare autograph of Allan Haines Lockheed signed on a commemorative cover. The cover is boldly signed ''Allan H. Lockheed'' in black fountain pen. The cover is postmarked San Diego, CA July 9, 1935, and is affixed with one U.S. commemorative postage stamp. The cover measures 6.50 x 3.50 inches, the cover was opened from the bottom [no damage] it has trivial toning otherwise is in fine condition. The autograph is authentic, exceedingly rare to obtain and will be a desirable addition to any aviation collection.
