Description: Agave salmiana var.Ferox for simplification is called pseudferox which means false ferox. It's said that true A.salmiana is a zone 9 plant so not hardy here. Since pre-Columbian times Agaves were cherished for various reasons including to make fiber for rope. So Agaves were often moved around as migration occurred. As this happened the less hardy species were naturally hybridizing with more cold hardy species like protoamericana, or gentryi. This occurs easily because they are loved by hummingbirds and various pollinators. So without more DNA testing it's hard to say exactly what species this is. What we do know is we planted our Agave in 2021 here in zone 8a Western NC. It's been through several winters now and is about 3 feet tall and wide. The mother plant that ours came from was 5+ feet tall and at least that wide. This species will sucker but they're not hard to keep in check. You will want to keep some of the suckers and not remove them all. Once agave flower the main plant will hopefully set seed but then die. So the smaller plants around it will continue growing and spreading. These are hardy to at least 5°f for short durations and should be a zone 7b plant so long as they receive good winter drainage. We do Not protect these plants in winter so long as they're planted in the ground. Agave can handle our summer rains and moisture but keeping the roots drier in winter is key. I recommend planting them on a mounded bed or slope and amending the soil. With our heavy clay soil we use a mixture of sand, bark, compost and our natural soil, which is blended together. This will depend on one's climate and soil composition. They can be kept in a pot for several years but will require potting into larger sizes as they grow and have a large root system. We ship our plants well wrapped but without the pot, USPS Priority mail.
